Oriental Pied Hornbill
Wildlife photography exploring the social behaviour of the Oriental pied hornbill in urban Singapore.
Location: Singapore
Species: Oriental pied hornbill
Project Description
While living next to the coast of Singapore between 2017 and 2021, we found ourselves in the middle of territory used by a family of hornbills nesting in the trunk of a tree a stone’s throw from our apartment. Barely a day went by when we didn’t see or hear members of our local hornbill flock.
Not only did they regularly visit their nesting tree but they often visited the palm tree in front of our balcony. It’s hard not to be captivated by these intelligent and charismatic birds that have successfully secured a foothold in Singapore island and also a place in the hearts of local residents. Sometimes they can be found on trees by the beach, sometimes in the mangrove and more often than not in the local park which also includes a playground where children frequently enjoy seeing these large birds up close.
Now increasingly common in Singapore, the hornbill fascinated me with its playful social behaviour and strong family bonds.
